Scotty Sherrill served as Executive Director of the Nacogdoches Treatment Center for 24 years. Her responsibilities included supervising the programs and staff of the center. She was also responsible for training and supervising volunteers who worked in the various programs. One of her major roles was grant writing and fund raising to keep the Center operating as a free clinic. The purpose of the Center was to provide rehabilitation services to the needy, disabled children and adults of Nacogdoches County.
She was successful in writing grants and obtaining funds from the following sources: the DD Council, the Texas Rehabilitation Commission, the Department of Human Resources, the Temple Foundation, the Pinewoods Foundation, the Sid Richardson Foundation, the Martin Foundation, and the Texas Highway Department 16(2) B Program. Under Scotty's leadership, the Nacogdoches Treatment Center added new programs, new staff, and more equipment, therefore requiring three (3) different expansion projects to provide additional space.
As President of the Nacogdoches Handicapped Housing, Inc., A non-profit corporation, she and the other board members were able to obtain approximately $2.8 million in HUD funds to build 64 units of barrier free housing for the disabled in Nacogdoches. She has served as President of the corporation for the past 23 years.
Scotty was appointed by the Commissioner of the Texas Rehabilitation Commission in 1985 to serve on the Consumer Advisory Committee. She served three (3) two year terms. The purpose of the committee was to advise the Commissioner and his staff regarding services and programs offered by the Texas Rehabilitation Commission to disabled people. The committee met quarterly in Austin, Texas. Sherrill attended Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.
